Joshua Abarbanel [Escultura]

Joshua Abarbanel

Joshua Abarbanel is an American artist born in Manchester, England in 1966, who examines creation and impermanence, regularly using forms and patterns evocative of biological, botanical, geological, and mechanical structures. Finding inspiration in fractals, accretive formations, and the Fibonacci sequence, Abarbanel's work is suffused with paradox: between the made and the grown, life and death, and microscopic and aerial perspectives. His sculptures and other projects are visual metaphors for archetypal relationships between people, between individuals and communities, and between humankind and the planet, and also illustrate how disparate parts can come together to make a whole in beautiful and startling ways.

«My memory of being interested in science dates back to 8th grade chemistry. I remember our teacher rapped on a granite table and said these were atoms in motion and I didn’t really hear another word he said for about two weeks. It’s those kinds of mysteries that have driven the work; those mysteries all around you that are waiting to be seen.
Then as a kid we had an Encyclopedia Britannica with probably 20 plates of the human body with layers of acetate sheets over them and you would first see the image of a naked man and you would see the skin and then you’d peel away that acetate and then you’d see the muscles and then you’d peel another layer of acetate and see the organs and then you’d dive deeper and deeper.
I’ve been transfixed with the idea of trying to see the unseen. In terms of formal training in science I don’t have that so in a way it’s like looking it as poetry instead of as formulas.»

«I can create initial shapes and design them on the computer and then by hand put them all together in way that feels organic but really came about through having access to that new tool.

«Initially I really didn’t think computers were going to bring anything to me and have a tangible impact on my work.
What was interesting is when I got out of school in 1993 the world was becoming hyper-digital and though I’d studied ceramics the teaching jobs were all about teaching digital. Now I teach digital media all day long (at LA Harbor College); it’s something I’d said I wouldn’t do.
This is a long circle to come back to now making sculpture but doing it with a hybrid process; I finally feel I’m breathing some level of humanity or organic kind of quality into it so the digital isn’t overwhelming the end result. (...) I’m very interested in the Japanese concept of wabi sabi, of beauty in imperfection.
If you think of humanity is a field of wild flowers, we all want to be perfect but when you go up and look close each one has a couple petals that are out of order and I think that’s an important quality to bring into the work, finding the wabi sabi.»

"His constructions resemble the fractal perfection of lichen, moss, barnacles, flower beds and the knotty, gnarly bark of the wood from which they are culled. Newer works called Hulls resemble helmets, geodes, armadillos covered in flowers, partly unearthed ancient vessels… and are set down with balanced poise and illuminated from within. (...) the illusion at work in Abarbanel’s pieces is the push and pull between the made and the grown, rather than between the flat and the spatial."

In addition to his works on wood and digital images, Joshua has done other artistic projects of a very different nature. You can see an example in the section "Arctic" in his website. Joshua explains it this way:
«In October 2015 I participated in The Arctic Circle, an expeditionary artists residency aboard a Barquentine Tall Ship. With twenty-five other artists and a small crew, we sailed for more than two weeks around the international archipelago of Svalbard, ten degrees south of the North Pole, to experience this unparalleled region, do research for future artistic endeavors, and make art in situ. Presently I am in creating a new body of work—including photographs, video, sound, and sculpture—inspired by my experiences in the Arctic.»
