Mi circo / My Circus", 2004

Tú y yo / You and I", 2004

Historia china / Chinese Story", 2005

Déjà Vu", 2005

Maleonn, whose real name is Ma Liang, is a Chinese graphic designer, director and photographer. Although his works deal with a variety of themes, all of them share a unique, surreal character.
He was born into an artistic family in 1972. His father was the director of the Shanghai Opera and his mother was a well-known film actress. Nonetheless, Maleonn’s childhood was a turbulent one because, after having been born in a Communist “re-education” camp where his parents had been sent during the Cultural Revolution, he was sent back to Shanghai to be raised by extended family until his parents’ release.
He was encouraged to pursue art from early childhood, and showed interest in painting early on. Maleonn graduated from the Fine Art College of Shanghai University.

Muchachos de Shangai / Shanghai Boys", 2005

Esclavo y amo / Slave and Master", 2005

«I always think that my parents are people with childlike innocence. They actually gave their son such a special name – Ma Liang, exactly the same as the ‘Ma Liang and the Magic Paintbrush’ in the fairy tale (see below). My childhood was a time when all words and characters meant interclass struggle. My name was simply regarded as a crazy person’s name; just like naming your child ‘Harry Porter’ or ‘Superman’ today as these do not seem serious at all. My name was just like a big joke which made me extremely embarrassed.»

«I knew I did not have that magic brush which could magically turn rot into beauty but I still had to answer to the name ‘Ma Liang’, which made me ashamed. (...)
Fortunately, the name Ma Liang brings me not only difficulties in my childhood but also some miraculous turning points in my life.
(...)
Someone says a name is curse which will control a person’s entire life. Therefore, my dream-like name will be my inevitable destiny. The magician in ancient tales possessed a magical brush which can turn imagination into reality. But what I, as another Ma Liang, want to do is to grind the reality into light dusts that will spread with the wind to cloud your sights.
Therefore, the works I present to you do not manifest reality but only unlimited imagination. I hope you will enjoy them with pleasure as you have when you enjoy flowers through fog, and take them as soft labyrinths where you can walk through the walls at any time, or take them as puzzles which you can explain in your own way.»

Niños inolvidables Nº 1 / Unforgivable Children #1", 2005

Libro de Tabú / Book of Taboo", 2006

Compared to his parent's generation, Maleonn feels he has a lot more flexibility with his work. But he wants young artists in China to be encouraged more to express their thoughts.
"During my 11 years of art education, there was never a lesson on soul, inner thoughts, emotion or love," he said. "How can an artist not talk about these things?"
Maleonn says his way to overcome this barrier was to fall back on things he learned at home.
"When I was 10 years old, I scribbled a story about a war on the entire wall of our house," he says.
He could have been severely punished had it been any other family home. "But my artist parents, especially my father, thought it was rather cute and laughed it off."
And that, says Maleonn, gave him the encouragement to pursue his dreams.

Días en el algodón de azúcar / Days on the Cotton Candy", 2006

Nostalgia", 2006

«I bought my first camera–an extremely poor digital one–in Apr 2004. That was the most boring period in my career,. Repetitive and uncreative commercial shorts made me feel frustrated with my life. Then, to extricate myself from disappointment and emptiness, I placed my hopes on pressing the shutter. At the beginning it was only that.
Over the following two years I’ve never put the camera down. To tell the truth I cannot understand what links me to photography. I’m unwilling to consider myself as a traditional photographer, just as none of the photography associations has noticed my existence. Still, I hate the photography vest, and what that represents is the most Plebeian part of photography. But I have to say that now I’m truly falling in love with taking pictures.»

Retrato de Mefisto Nº 1 / Portrait of Mephisto #1"

In his series of works entitled Portrait of Mephisto, Maleonn gives his rendering of the tale of Faust, with a special emphasis on the demon Mephisto, the devil’s envoy. Maleonn’s skills as a painter become apparent in this series, seeing as they were taken in black and white and were later hand-painted on.

"琥珀 / Ámbar / Amber", 2008

Hojas de Hierba / Leaves of Grass", 2008

«I always hope that my camera and me will become simpler and not carry any sense of suffering. In this age, there are no longer any pedestalled icons. The so-called realism of photography becomes suspicious when contrasted with this this unreal world. That means no matter how pretentiously I view my own photography, in the end my pictures are just little fables, or parts of an inexperienced performance. That’s all. What I desire is the applause and the smiles of the audience, the curtain call or an encore. All that is simple, so nice.»
