Melissa Cooke [Dibujo]

Melissa's drawings are made by dusting thin layers of graphite onto paper with a dry brush.  The softness of the graphite provides a smooth surface that can be augmented by erasing in details and textures.  No pencils are used in the work, allowing the surface to glow without the shine of heavy pencil marks.

Serie "Tú me conoces mejor que yo misma" / You Know Me Better Than I Know Myself Series (2009-10)
"Los cuentos de hadas terminan a medianoche / Fairy Tales End At Midnight"
Grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 38" x 50"

Serie "Perdida dentro de tí" / Lost Inside You Series (2010-11)
"Llena de mí / Full of Me", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 50" x 38"

"Sumergirse / Submerge", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 50" x 90"

Serie "Enmascarada" / Masked Series (2008)
"Autorretrato como un águila / Self Portrait as an Eagle", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 50" x 38"

Serie No hay sitio como el hogar / No Place Like Home Series (2014-)
"Ojos / Eyes", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 50" x 38"

Serie Emergida / Surfaced Series (2012-13)
"Bloqueada / Blocked", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 50" x 67"

Serie Emergida / Surfaced Series (2012-13)
"Desteñida / Washed out", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 50" x 50"

It Was Supposed to be Temporary", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 50" x 38"

«I gain so much by losing. My process was actually born from frustration. I was in a point of my work where I was feeling stagnant and confined, making these tedious, time intensive, small pencil drawings. I knew I had to make some changes. My solution was to visit an art store and leave with an armful of new supplies, including a can of powdered graphite. I tried watercolor for about two days, and was miserable.  Aggravated in the studio and mourning over some horrible wash of blue that I was attempting to paint, I grabbed a can of powdered graphite and a huge sheet of paper. Within four hours, and a flurry of powder, I had my first powdered graphite drawing. No one had ever shown me how to use the medium; I just grabbed the nearest brush and started feverishly dusting the graphite onto the paper. It was in the mood of defeat that my process was born.»

Melissa trabajando en su serie "No hay sitio como el hogar" / at work with her No Place Like Home Series

«I love working at an in-home studio. I currently work from our second bedroom; it is so convenient and comfortable! The ground is covered with anti-fatigue flooring to protect the wood from my graphite, and my feet from getting tired.
I work best in the afternoon. I usually grab a cup of coffee, put on some music or a podcast, and get to work conquering deadlines and goals.»

Serie "Tú me conoces mejor que yo misma" / You Know Me Better Than I Know Myself Series (2009-10)
"La gladiadora / The Gladiator", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 50" x 38"

«"You Know Me Better Than I Know Myself" explores the repressed darkness and sexuality inside all of us. I employ props, costumes and theatrics in order to provoke the dormant aspects of my identity.
These drawings are inspired by emotionally charged memory flashes that have altered my outlook on relationships. The drawing process first serves as a cathartic experience, allowing me to reevaluate the effects of these events. Soon thereafter, the rehashing merely exaggerates emotions. Reality is increasingly skewed by imagination; fiction becomes truth.»

Serie No hay sitio como el hogar / No Place Like Home Series (2014-)
"Basura de Nueva York (Unicornio sucio) / NYC Trash (Dirty Unicorn)"
Grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 22" x 22"

«"No Place Like Home" fuses elements of realism with the language of contemporary art and street culture. The images are drawn from scenes I found in my daily life while walking the streets of Brooklyn. They are inspired by marks people have left on the city: discarded objects, wheatpaste posters, and graffiti. In the ever changing, gritty landscape of New York, one moment in time is captured. Like a collaboration with the city, my voice joins the layered conversation of street art and culture.»

Serie Inmersión / Plunge Series (2012-13)
"Ingrávida / Weightless", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 50" x 50"

«For "Plunge", I photographed myself as I sank and swirled in bathwater. The documentary photos were then used as inspiration for drawing. The images depart from the framing of traditional portraiture. We zoom into close sections of the face. This cropping pushes the head to the surface of the paper, making the figure more ambiguous. Flesh and hair intertwine with ripples and bubbles. The scale of the drawings engulfs the viewer in a sea of marks. Brushstrokes break down to reveal illusion. The bathtub becomes a landscape.»

Serie Emergida / Surfaced Series (2012-13)
"Crestada / Crested", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 50" x 50"

«“Surfaced” acknowledges the relationship between photography, painting and drawing in portraiture.  I take photographs as I paint and pour liquids onto myself, using my face as a canvas.  The photo shoot references the practice of drawing and painting; then the final graphite drawing references photography.  The boundaries between the mediums are broken down and the processes are interwoven.»
